PCOM Simulation Center Highlights

Saltzburg Clinical Learning & Assessment Center

PCOM offers simulation centers at each of its locations. Together, these centers provide educational services to programs including osteopathic medicine, physician assistant studies, biomedical sciences, physical therapy, pharmacy and psychology. PCOM also has a mobile simulation unit that allows students, other professionals and community members to learn about pre-hospital care.

PCOM's simulation center team is committed to advancing medical education through experiential learning and assessments. Our collaborative approach fosters the promotion of excellent clinical practice and ensures medical professionals are better educated. By increasing simulation center activities and enhancing community engagement, we aim to revolutionize healthcare education.

2023-2024 Academic Year Highlights

  • 12,514 hours of recorded Simulation Center activity, a 10.4% increase from the previous year
  • 9,815 individual patient recorded encounters, a 3.2% increase from the previous year
  • 5,106 recording hours by campuses, a 15.2% increase from the previous year
  • Open Lab users, overall increase from the previous year:
    • 3,957 Total hours
    • 943 Sign-ins
    • 384 Unique users
    • 214 Repeat user
    • 55.7% repeat attendance in Open Lab for users who attended
  • Sim-Ambulance:
    • 1,131 Miles driven
    • 20 events attended outside PCOM
  • 2 Conference speaking engagements
  • 10 Team presentations
  • Recruited and onboarded more than 50 new Standardized Patients, expanding the roster with individuals representing a broader range of ages, backgrounds, and lived experiences
  • Numerous events held and attended

As part of our commitment to experiential learning, the Standardized Patient (SP) program successfully recruited and onboarded more than 50 new SPs representing a broad range of ages, backgrounds and lived experiences. Additionally, the program updated and refined its internal processes as part of its efforts to streamline training, improve quality assurance and ensure consistency across campuses.

Simulation Center Events

PCOM's Simulation Centers host a variety of events throughout the academic year including high-fidelity simulations, tours, ultrasound labs, graduate medical education events and more. Medical students experience simulations including areas such as orthopedics, labor and delivery, head injuries, abdominal issues and cardiac events. Students also have the opportunity to practice intubation, lumbar puncture, suturing, phlebotomy, injections, airway management, and other primary care skills.
