September 30, 2022This month, Shafik Habal, MD, assistant dean for curriculum management and reporting and associate professor of
microbiology and immunology, published research titled “To Infinity and Beyond: Expanding the Scope of Basic Sciences in Meeting Accreditation
Standards” in the journal Medical Science Educator.
This work aims to enhance the delivery of innovative medical education curricula in
alignment with accreditation standards. Dr. Habal’s research focuses on interprofessional
training, service-learning, pre-clerkship integration, and self-directed learning
and the impact on accreditation standards for health professions education accrediting
organizations. Through this work, Dr. Habal hopes that enhanced curricula will help
students become more prepared residents, competent physicians, and productive healthcare
