Enhancing the Delivery of Innovative Medical Education Curricula

This month, Shafik Habal, MD, assistant dean for curriculum management and reporting and associate professor of microbiology and immunology, published research titled “To Infinity and Beyond: Expanding the Scope of Basic Sciences in Meeting Accreditation Standards” in the journal Medical Science Educator.

This work aims to enhance the delivery of innovative medical education curricula in alignment with accreditation standards. Dr. Habal’s research focuses on interprofessional training, service-learning, pre-clerkship integration, and self-directed learning and the impact on accreditation standards for health professions education accrediting organizations. Through this work, Dr. Habal hopes that enhanced curricula will help students become more prepared residents, competent physicians, and productive healthcare professionals. Dr. Habal is conducting this research with the International Association of Science Educators (IAMSE).

September 2022 Research Highlights at PCOM

Bettina Bernstein, DO, clinical assistant professor, psychiatric medicine, co-authored “Building the 21st Century Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist,” which was published in the journal Academic Psychiatry.

Valerie Cadet, PhD, director of health equity curricular initiatives, bio-medical sciences; Stacie Fairley, PhD, associate professor of microbiology and immunology, bio-medical sciences; and Douglas Koch, EdD, associate director of teaching and learning, bio-medical sciences, presented a roundtable discussion titled “Let’s Talk: An Organic Conversation On The Importance Of Incorporating DEI Into Undergraduate Medical Education And Assessments” and a workshop titled “The Journey To Incorporate DEI Into The Undergraduate Medical Curriculum, Assessment, And Evaluation,” at the Ottawa Conference 2022 in Lyon, France. They also presented “Infusing DEI Into A New Medical Curriculum" at the National Association of Medical Minority Educators 2022 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA.

Daniel Eichorn, DO `20, resident, otolaryngology, co-authored “Unresectable Primary Tracheal Synovial Sarcoma,” which was published in the Ear, Nose and Throat Journal.

Michelle Lent, PhD, associate professor, clinical psychology; Meghan Visek (Clinical PsyD `25) and Paulina Syracuse (Clinical Psyd `24) co-authored “Weight Stability In Adults With Obesity Initiating Medical Marijuana Treatment For Other Medical Conditions,” which was published in the Journal of Cannabis Research.

Dr. Lent also co-authored “Electronic Health Record–Based Recruitment and Retention and Mobile Health App Usage: Multisite Cohort Study,” which was published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

Salvador Fore, DO, resident, orthopaedic surgery; Joseph D'Alonzo, DO `18, resident, orthopaedic surgery and Zachary Wells, DO, resident, orthopaedic surgery co-authored “Laboratory-Reported Normal Value Ranges Should Not Be Used to Diagnose Periprosthetic Joint Infection,” which was published in the journal Cureus.

Valerie Foy (DO `23) co-authored “Aneurysmal Bone Cyst Of The Skull: A Case Report,” which was published in the journal SAGE Open Medical Case Reports.

Joseph Harrison (Clinical PsyD `25) co-authored “Leveraging Behavioral Economics And Implementation Science To Engage Patients At Risk For Suicide In Mental Health Treatment: A Pilot Study Protocol,” which was published in the journal Pilot and Feasibility Studies.

Dominique Jacobs (DO `23) co-authored “Treatment-Resistant Pemphigoid Following SARS-Cov-2 Vaccination,” which was published in the journal SKIN: Journal of Cutaneous Medicine.

Max Kabolowsky (DO `23) was first author of “Interventional Management of Portal Hypertension in Cancer Patients,” which was published in the journal Current Oncology Reports.

Marilyn Le (DO `21) co-authored “Coexistent of Morphea and DLE in a Patient With Beta Thalassemia Leading to a Diagnosis of Systemic Lupus Erythematous,” which was published in the journal SKIN: Journal of Cutaneous Medicine.

Tyler Lee (DO `23) co-authored “Communication Skills Utilized By Physicians In The Pediatric Outpatient Setting,” which was published in the journal BMC Health Services Research.

John Malin (DO `23) co-authored “Robotic-Assisted Versus Conventional Off-Pump Coronary Surgery In Women: A Propensity-Matched Study,” which was published in the Journal of Cardiac Surgery.

Tyler Pratte, DO, resident, orthopaedic surgery; Alfonso Arevalo, DO `17, resident, orthopaedic surgery and Joseph Wazen, DO, resident, orthopaedic surgery, co-authored “Arthroscopic Suprapectoral Biceps Tenodesis: The Best of Both Worlds,” which was published in the journal Arthroscopy Techniques.

Sara (Mandy) Reece, PharmD, director of interprofessional education, pharmacy practice, presented “Chronic Kidney Disease In Type 2 Diabetes: An Update For The Diabetes Care And Education Specialist” at the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES) Annual Conference.

Smera Saikumar (DO `23); Pavan Patel (DO `23); Christian Edwards (DO `23) and Geossette Garcia (DO `23) co-authored “A Paraurethral Aggressive (Deep) Angiomyxoma,” which was published in the journal Case Reports in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Taha Siddiqui (DO `23) co-authored “Understanding Patient Perceptions Towards Direct Primary Care: A Focus Group Study,” which was published in the Journal of Patient Experience.

Lauren Williams (DO `24) co-authored “Utility of Automated Data-Adaptive Propensity Score Method For Confounding By Indication In Comparative Effectiveness Study In Real World Medicare And Registry Data,” which was published in the journal PLoS One.
