How to apply for scholarships at PCOM

In order to apply for PCOM scholarships, students must meet the criteria listed in each scholarship as well as complete one or more of the following requirements:

  • Complete the FAFSA application by the PCOM scholarship deadline each year.
    • Remember, many students must include parental income information on the FAFSA to be considered for scholarships with financial need criteria.
  • Complete the PCOM Scholarship Profile within myPCOM by the scholarship deadline each year.
  • Complete an additional application or essay for certain scholarships.

About admissions scholarships for incoming students

PCOM admissions scholarships

The PCOM Office of Admissions offers merit scholarships to newly admitted students.

Certain programs have a limited number of full- and partial-tuition scholarships available during the application cycle.

Students will be considered by the Office of Admissions and PCOM faculty based on the admissions process—academic record, strength of interview and promise of exceptional achievement. If an incoming student is awarded an admissions merit scholarship, they will be notified directly by the PCOM Office of Admissions at the time of or after receipt of their PCOM admissions acceptance letter.

With a rich history as a college of osteopathic medicine, PCOM offers numerous scholarships for returning DO students at PCOM, PCOM Georgia and PCOM South Georgia. There are several scholarships available for students in our pharmacy, psychology, physician assistant and other programs as well.

The Office of Financial Aid awards financial need scholarships to admitted and returning students.

There is limited funding available for financial need scholarships, so priority is given to returning PCOM students who complete their requirements on time.

The Clyde and Sandra Strickland Endowed Doctoral Scholarship

Doctoral programs PCOM Georgia Donor Funded

The Clyde and Sandra Strickland Endowed Doctoral Scholarship was established in 2020. The annual distribution will be divided equally into three scholarships. A scholarship will be given to one student in each of the three doctoral programs at PCOM Georgia: Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). Funds generated from this endowed scholarship will provide financial assistance to students who hold a diploma from a Gwinnett County Public High School, who are enrolled in one of the doctoral degree programs at PCOM Georgia with demonstrated financial need. Provided that the recipients remain in good academic standing, the scholarship may be renewed for up to four years.

The Chaundry Family Endowed Scholarship

The Chaudhry Family Endowed Scholarship was established in 2016 by Iftikhar Chaudhry, MD, and Aisha Chaudhry, DPM. The scholarship provides financial support to a student with significant financial need who demonstrates academic excellence.

PCOM Foundation Scholarship

The PCOM Foundation Scholarship is a financial need-based award. Award amounts vary depending on student's financial need, program, enrollment, funding available and other factors.

The Board of Trustees Mason W. Pressly and Oscar John Snyder Scholarship is named in honor of PCOM's founders. The PCOM Board of Trustees has generously funded this scholarship.

The Minority Medical Student Endowed Scholarship is based on academic and financial need, awarded to minority students: African American, Native American, Puerto Rican-Mainlander and Mexican-American.

Recipients are first year under-represented minority students, with outstanding academic credentials who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

William M. King, DO '62, Endowed Minority Scholarship

DO PCOM Donor Funded

The William M. King, DO '62, Endowed Minority Scholarship was established in 2015 by the William M. King Charitable Foundation.

The scholarship is awarded to a student who meets the following criteria: African-American student who is a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; enrolled in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program at the Philadelphia campus in good academic standing; and demonstrated financial need as determined by the PCOM Scholarship Profile. The scholarship is awarded to one (1) student recipient for each of his/her four years at PCOM; provided, however, that the student remains in good academic standing in each of those years.

William M. King, DO '62, Physicians of Tomorrow Endowed Scholarship

The William M. King, DO '62, Physicians of Tomorrow Endowed Scholarship was established in 2016 by the William M. King Charitable Foundation.

The scholarship is awarded to one student on an annual basis for his/her four years at PCOM based on the following criteria: Is African-American; enrolled in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program at the Philadelphia campus of PCOM; remains in good academic standing each year he/she receives the scholarship; and demonstrates financial need.

Carol Fox Endowed Scholarship

DO PCOM, PCOM Georgia, PCOM South Georgia Donor Funded

The Carol Fox Endowed Scholarship was created by the alumni and friends of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine to honor Carol Fox for her commitment to the Admissions and Student Affairs programs of the College.

The scholarship is awarded upon matriculation to accepted DO students, one from each of the PCOM sites, upon recommendation from the Admissions Team and the Admissions Committees with final approval by the Faculty Committee on Honors and Awards. The following qualities are to be considered in the selection of these individuals: strong academic credentials, conversance with the osteopathic philosophy, humanism, leadership potential, prior military service, scholar athlete.

Recommendations to the Chief Admissions Officer should be made based on observations at the admissions interview, letters of recommendation from premed advisors and osteopathic physicians as well as any other contacts with the students.

Thomas R. and William C. LeMasters Family Endowed Scholarship

The Thomas R. and William C. LeMasters Family Endowed Scholarship was established in 2018 by brothers, Thomas R. LeMasters, DO ’78, and William C. LeMasters, DO ’81.

The scholarship provides financial assistance to a second-, third- or fourth-year student enrolled in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program who exhibit academic excellence and hails from Carbon, Schuylkill and/or Northumberland counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Ethel Allen Endowed Memorial Scholarship

DO PCOM, PCOM Georgia Donor Funded

The Dr. Ethel Allen Endowed Memorial Scholarship is awarded to two African-American female first year students enrolled in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree program. One will be enrolled on the campus located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the other will be enrolled on the campus in Suwanee, Georgia; and students will have demonstrated academic excellence and financial need.

Louis F. Amalfitano, DO, Family Endowed Legacy Scholarship

The Louis F. Amalfitano, DO, Family Endowed Legacy Scholarship was established in 2019.

Funds generated annually are used to provide financial support to a student with demonstrated financial need who is a member of a PCOM Legacy Family, defined as having two (2) or more relatives who graduated from any of PCOM's programs.

PCOM Foundation and Board of Trustees Pharmacy Scholarship

Pharmacy PCOM Georgia PCOM Funded

The PCOM Foundation and Board of Trustees Pharmacy Scholarship has been generously funded by the PCOM Foundation and Board of Trustees.

Incoming pharmacy students who are admitted to the program are eligible to receive this scholarship. Historically, scholarships have ranged in value from $3,000 to $4,000. The award is renewable each year as long as the recipient completes their degree within the expected length of the program (without extensions), their enrollment status is more than half time and they maintain good academic standing in their program.

This scholarship will be forfeited if the student receives a full tuition Board of Trustees Mason W. Pressly and Oscar John Snyder Scholarship.

The Matthew Schure, PhD, Endowed Scholarship was made possible by contributions from the PCOM Alumni Association and the PCOM College Board of Trustees in honor of PCOM's seventh president, Matthew Schure, PhD. Awarded to one or more incoming students who are: enrolled in a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program at PCOM; and have a strong academic record; and have demonstrated financial need.

ALMO Corporation Endowed Scholarship

The ALMO Corporation Endowed Scholarship was established in 2016 by Gene Chaiken, LLD.

The scholarship is used to support an incoming student who will matriculate into any of PCOM's degree-granting programs and who has demonstrated financial need as defined by the Office of Financial Aid. The scholarship is designed to help make a PCOM education possible for a student who would not have otherwise been able to attend. The scholarship award will be renewable for the selected student until he/she completes all degree requirements and graduates from his/her selected program, provided, however, that the student remains in good academic standing, as determined by PCOM.

The Sara Somers Rupert, RN, Class of 1933 Endowed Physician Assistant Scholarship was established in 1998 by Sara Somers Rupert, RN '33, with a donation to the PCOM Mission Capital Campaign.

Candidate(s) must be a junior student(s) in the Physician Assistant program and must demonstrate the humanistic, caring and compassionate qualities of a future physician assistant. Financial need, scholarly work and involvement in student activities will be considered. Final selection is made in the spring and based upon the recommendation of the Physician Assistant Department faculty.

Law Enforcement Forensic Medicine Scholarship

The Law Enforcement Forensic Medicine Scholarship is a one time award of $2,000 awarded to MS in Forensic Medicine students who are sworn in as an officer in a police department.

To apply, students must demonstrate their status as a sworn in police officer by submitting a copy of their badge or a letter from their police department’s human resources office to the PCOM Office of Financial Aid.

Alumni Association of PCOM Endowed Scholarship

The Alumni Association of PCOM Scholarship was established with donations to the PCOM Mission Capital Campaign by the Alumni Association of PCOM, graduates and friends of the college.

This scholarship is awarded to full-time matriculated students who have completed one academic year and rank in the top 15% of their class, participate in student government and/or extra-curricular activities and demonstrate financial need.

PCOM Alumni Association Loan to Scholarship

The PCOM Alumni Association Loan to Scholarship Fund is awarded with the following criteria: Students should have passing grades in all courses and should exhibit financial need. Funds available to all students on all campuses for all programs.

PCOM Georgia Student Award

The PCOM Georgia Student Award Fund was established in 2014 by donations to the Champions of Healthcare Event held on the Georgia Campus. The award of $1,000 is presented to a student who is enrolled in any program of study at the PCOM Georgia campus who demonstrates financial assistance determined through the PCOM application process.

JoAnne Pieringer, PhD, Endowed Scholarship

All programs PCOM, PCOM Georgia, PCOM South Georgia Donor Funded

The JoAnne Pieringer, PhD, Endowed Scholarship was established in 1995 to honor Dr. Pieringer, an outstanding PCOM educator, researcher and community advocate.

The scholarship is awarded to an eligible student from any of the College's degree programs, in any year of study who is interested in biomedical sciences research and who exemplifies Dr. Pieringer’s traits: intellectual curiosity and concern for others within and beyond the PCOM community. Women are given priority for this scholarship.

The Pieringer Supplementary Application opens on February 15 and is due on April 1.

Polyprobe Endowed Scholarship

The Polyprobe Endowed Scholarship was established in 1998 during the PCOM Mission Capital Campaign by Polyprobe, Inc. to foster advanced study in molecular medicine.

Candidates must submit a 1,000 word scientific paper on the following question:

What is your vision of the impact that molecular medicine will have on your future medical practice?

They also need to include past and current research experience and submit a separate bibliographical sketch detailing education and work experiences. A letter of recommendation is optional.

This scholarship is available to all students in good academic standing attending the Philadelphia campus. Final selection will be based upon recommendations from the Polyprobe Scholarship committee.

The Polyprobe Supplementary Application opens on February 15 and is due on April 1.

Rugby Endowed Scholarship

The Rugby Endowed Scholarship was established in 1996 by active members of the 1997 PCOM Rugby Club.

The scholarship is awarded to one female and one male student each year to lessen the financial debt of student athletes. The recipients must be in good academic standing in any PCOM program, have demonstrated financial need, and must be an active participant in athletics on the Philadelphia campus or in the Philadelphia community.

Alumni Association of PCOM International Fellowship

DO PCOM, PCOM Georgia, PCOM South Georgia Donor Funded

An international clinical rotation is offered to one fourth-year DO student. The applying student must have a site selected and have obtained written approval for the clerkship from the office of clinical education. A completed application and short essay is required describing the goals of the rotation and your reasons for going. Student will apply for this fellowship during their third-year and complete during their fourth-year.

Martha and Michael J. Avallone Endowed Memorial Scholarship

The Martha and Michael J. Avallone Endowed Memorial Scholarship was established in 1995 by the late Michael F. Avallone, Sr., DO '59, in memory of his parents, Martha and Michael J. Avallone. Yearly awards will be limited to five or less students.

Candidates must be second- or third-year medical students in good academic standing, have a totally disabled parent or have lost one or both parents, are residents of Pennsylvania, and demonstrate financial need.

Michael F. Avallone Sr., DO '59, Memorial Endowed Scholarship

DO PCOM, PCOM Georgia, PCOM South Georgia Donor Funded

The Michael F. Avallone, Sr., DO '59, Memorial Scholarship was established in 2019, in memory of Dr. Avallone by his loving family, many of whom followed in Dr. Avallone's footsteps and became osteopathic physicians. Dr. Avallone was a dedicated leader beginning with his student days. After opening two practices, Dr. Avallone was one of the first to offer a "one stop" state of the art medical center in 2003. Known for a keen innovative ability that benefited every aspect of his life, Dr. Avallone held many leadership positions in medical organizations helping to shape policy in osteopathic medicine. So great his influence at the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association, the organization named their Opening Session after Dr. Avallone. The PCOM Alumni Association bestowed their highest honor, the Certificate of Honor, on Dr. Avallone in 2007. The Avallone family wishes to help deserving students, demonstrating the caring, compassionate qualities that Dr. Avallone so exemplified.

The scholarship is used to provide financial support to a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree program student at PCOM who desires to practice family medicine.

Dr. Frederic H. Barth Memorial Scholarship

DO PCOM, PCOM Georgia, PCOM South Georgia Donor Funded

The Dr. Frederic H. Barth Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Barth who was President of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine from June 1956 until 1974. He was appointed the first chancellor of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, a position he held until his death in 1976.

The fund provides one scholarship in the amount of $7,500 to a second-year DO student in the top fifth of the class. Any additional income generated by the fund is distributed to financially needy DO students.

J. Steven Blake, DO '89, Endowed Scholars Society

DO PCOM, PCOM Georgia, PCOM South Georgia Donor Funded

The J. Steven Blake, DO '89, Endowed Scholars Society was established by J. Steven Blake, DO '89, in 2016 to be used as a recruitment tool for African-American students, who have community service experience, demonstrated academic excellence and are interested in the DO program.

One scholarship is awarded to a student in each year of the 4 year DO program. The scholarship is given to students who received the scholarship in previous years as long as they maintain a B average or higher.

The Board of Trustees Scholarship for Sibling/Spouse will be awarded in the amount of $1,000 to those students in the DO program who have a sibling or spouse currently enrolled in any of PCOM’s programs. The PCOM Board of Trustees has generously funded this scholarship.

Aaron and Julia Brenner Endowed Scholarship Fund

DO PCOM, PCOM Georgia, PCOM South Georgia Donor Funded

The Aaron and Julia Brenner Endowed Scholarship was established in 1993 by Bernard Brenner and Marvin Comisky, Esq., co-trustees of a trust fund established in 1978 under the will of Aaron Brenner. This scholarship is offered to medical students who would otherwise be unable to continue their education.

Dr. H. Trebing Burnard and Margaret E. Burnard Scholarship

DO PCOM Donor Funded

The Dr. H. Trebing Burnard and Margaret E. Burnard Scholarship was established by a 2007 provision in the Will of Margaret E. Burnard, widow of H. Trebing Burnard, DO '38.

The fund provides one or more scholarships for deserving DO students at the Philadelphia campus.

Dr. Burnard was a family physician in Great Neck, NY. He taught at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and Mrs. Burnard credited PCOM for Dr. Burnard’s rewarding career and providing them with a wonderful life together.

Kearney Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of John “JD” Kearney, a second-year medical student at PCOM who passed away in 1999 while trying to rescue a friend on a hiking trail in Sedona, Arizona. JD's parents, John and Lois Kearney, and siblings, Elizabeth, Drew and Adam, established this scholarship as a way of celebrating JD's life and recognizing the potential of others who, like JD, seek to become truly osteopathic physicians — caring, hands-on, compassionate and accepting of humanity's failings. The recipient of the scholarship should reflect JD’s excellence in scholarship, his broad interests and love of people and his attitude toward life which was, in his words, "carpe diem."

One scholarship will be awarded annually to a second-, third-, or fourth-year student who has shown academic merit as well as an interest in extra-curricular activities, irrespective of financial need. Special preferences will be given to graduates of Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where JD received his undergraduate degree; however, the scholarship is not limited to such students. The Lambda Omicron Gamma (LOG) Endowed Scholarship is presented to a second-, third-, or fourth-year DO student who best exemplifies LOG's history and mission. The Caduceus Chapter of LOG was established at PCOM by Jewish DO students who were precluded from other fraternities because of their religion. Over the years, LOG opened its doors to women and minorities who were also excluded from the other fraternities, because of race, gender or religion.

Scholarship recipient selection is based on leadership qualities within the PCOM community, as well as interest in and involvement with the external community. The recipient(s) may not necessarily represent the most visible campus leaders, but rather those students who actively support the campus and the community. The Dr. & Mrs. Gregory G. Papadeas & Family Endowed Scholarship was established in 2016 by Gregory G. Papadeas, DO '88. The Scholarship is administered pursuant to the following criteria:

  • Student recipients must be a United States citizen of Greek ancestry, a baptized Greek Orthodox Christian and an active steward of a Greek Orthodox church; and

An amount equal to 75% of the annual distribution will be awarded to a matriculated first year student; and the remaining 25% will be divided evenly among all eligible applicants (who can be in any year of study). Scholarship recipients are encouraged to make a donation to the scholarship fund when able to do so.

The Parkview Endowed Memorial Scholarship was established by the physicians of Parkview Hospital upon the closing of the hospital in August 2003. Parkview Hospital, an osteopathic institution, was founded by PCOM alumni and faculty and trained many PCOM students, interns and residents during its 60+ years as a well-respected community hospital in lower northeast Philadelphia. Parkview physicians donated their remaining hospital dues to PCOM to establish this scholarship in support of DO students and to honor the memory of the hospital.

The scholarship is awarded each year to a second-, third- or fourth-year DO student who was raised and attended high school in Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery, Chester or Delaware county and demonstrates financial need and academic excellence.

Preference for scholarships is given to Philadelphia Futures graduates. Philadelphia Futures is an organization that seeks sponsors for Philadelphia public high school students, encouraging them to obtain college degrees through mentoring and financial support.
