Nicole Gulkis (PsyD '22)
Match Day 2021

March 22, 2021

Students from the class of 2021 celebrated one of the most exciting days in their professional journey—Match Day. Here they share their personal match story, what has inspired them along the way and what advice they would give to students starting the journey today.

In March 2021, Nicole Gulkis (PsyD '22) matched at University of Philadelphia Department of PsychiatryWhere did you match?

University of Pennsylvania Department of Psychiatry - Philadelphia, PA

What specialty did you match into and why did you choose this?

Clinical psychology - General track. I chose the general track because it aligns with my overarching goals of becoming a well-rounded clinical psychologist.

How did you feel when you found out you had matched?

Proud, excited and speechless!

What inspired you to pursue medicine?

Although I was initially attracted to the field of psychology from my observations and interactions with others, my passion in becoming a clinical psychologist is now stimulated by advocacy. I want to advocate for special populations such as those with acute and chronic medical and/or mental health conditions. I aspire to contribute to the integrity of the profession of psychology by influencing changes at systemic levels ranging from direct patient care to organizational development.

What advice would you give to a first year student starting their journey?

If I could give advice to a student starting out I’d say be flexible; stay open to feedback from professors and colleagues; remember self-care time is critical; and enjoy the learning experience!
