Peter Bidey, DO '08, MSEd, FACOFP, dean of the osteopathic medicine program and chief academic officer at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), has been named a 2025 City & State PA Healthcare Trailblazer in recognition of his leadership in medical education and his efforts to expand access to community-based care.

Bidey has built a career rooted in family medicine, academic leadership, and service to the osteopathic profession. Since joining PCOM in 2012, he has served in roles ranging from family medicine residency program director to vice chair of the department of family medicine, and he is now entering his third year as dean.

Bidey serves on the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP) Board of Governors, is a Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association trustee, is a national faculty member for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners, and sits on AACOM's Board of Deans and Governance Committee. Among his most meaningful contributions is mentoring future family physicians and promoting community-centered, collaborative care.

“I've lived most of my life in Philadelphia, which helps me connect with the community I serve and understand the local context,” Bidey said. “Having been at PCOM for most of the past 20 years, starting as a student, I've seen how the institution has evolved. I may be a little older than our current students, but I've been in their shoes—not long ago and not far from here—which helps me understand where they are and where we need to go.”

Bidey trains the osteopathic physicians of the future—those who blend hands-on osteopathic care with modern medical advancements. Recently, he has helped expand PCOM's educational reach and community impact, including increasing the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine class size at PCOM South Georgia to better serve rural populations.

“We're at an inflection point in healthcare, with new technologies and treatment methods rapidly transforming the field.”

He also launched a partnership with his alma mater, Holy Ghost Preparatory School, giving high school students early exposure to clinical practice and medical education. By supporting the expansion of PCOM's Healthcare Centers, Bidey has increased access to care for underserved communities and created more student training opportunities—advancing the College's mission of whole-person, equitable care.

“We're at an inflection point in healthcare, with new technologies and treatment methods rapidly transforming the field,” Bidey said. “PCOM is uniquely positioned to lead by integrating medical education, clinical outreach, and our strong alumni network.”

Bidey holds a bachelor's degree from Duquesne University, a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from PCOM, and a master of science in education degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians in family medicine and OMT, he is a fellow of the ACOFP and, in May 2025, he was inducted as one of the 48 new fellows of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
