Application Requirements

The Master of Science (MS) in Medical Laboratory Science program is designed to prepare program graduates for an exciting career in the field of laboratory medicine. The program offers a pre-professional option as well as an entirely online post-professional option.

Pre-Professional Program

The following information is applicable to the MS in Medical Laboratory Science pre-professional program.

When is the deadline to apply?

This academic program operates on a rolling admissions basis. The application closes on Friday, August 2, 2025, but an early application is highly recommended.

What are the next steps?

Once your application has been received, you will be contacted via email with a confirmation within 10-15 business days of its receipt including reminders of the appropriate steps to complete the application process. At this point, it is expected that applicants send or order all final transcripts from all universities/colleges attended.

As an applicant to the MS in Medical Laboratory Science program, you are responsible for ensuring that all admissions materials are completed accurately and submitted in a timely manner.

Are there minimum GPA and standardized test scores to apply?

The program director, faculty and the Office of Admissions conducts a holistic review of all completed and verified applications. There is a minimum grade point average of 3.0 for all upper-level science courses assessed during the application and transcript review process. Following the completion of the review process, each applicant is notified of an admissions decision by the Faculty Committee in writing, including any conditions that must be satisfied prior to or following enrollment.

Completed and verified applications and supporting documents will be reviewed on a rolling basis by the Faculty Committee on Admissions beginning in May. Applicants will be assessed on the following factors:

  • Baccalaureate degree
  • Prerequisite coursework
  • Essay
  • Writing sample
    • APA style format, 7th edition
    • There is no requirement on topic, it can be a previously submitted assignment, and will be assessed for grammar, flow of the paper, topic transitions throughout the paper, APA style format, and general grammar and punctuation skills.
Is there a baccalaureate degree requirement for the Medical Laboratory Science program?

All applicants must complete a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. It is preferred that the candidate have a conferred degree in biology or chemistry; however, degree concentrations with all science and math conditions satisfied will be considered.

What are the coursework prerequisites for PCOM’s Medical Laboratory Science program?

  • "General" coursework denotes the first two courses in the subject sequence for science majors.
  • AP coursework will be accepted provided the course and credits appear on your official college transcript.
  • All courses must be completed at a regionally accredited institution.
  • The MS in Medical Laboratory Science program will accept credits completed at a community college.
  • The MS in Medical Laboratory Science program will accept courses completed online or on campus. (at a regionally accredited institution). However, the MSMLS program DOES NOT accept online laboratory courses.
  • The MS in Medical Laboratory Science program will not accept prerequisite coursework completed as an audit or graded pass/fail.
  • The MS in Medical Laboratory Science program will not accept credits completed as CLEP courses.
Are you required to submit standardized test scores for the Medical Laboratory Science program?

No, there are no formal testing requirements for this program.

Is there an essay requirement?

Applicants must write a general autobiographical statement explaining your interest in this academic program as it relates to your career goals (in 500 words or less). Your completed essay should explain career goals, and how, if selected for the program, will the degree enable you to attain those goals. If there are any areas of your previous academic coursework that would reflect negatively on your acceptance to the program, applicants are encouraged to explain those concerns.

Criminal background check requirement

The College requires a criminal background check for all program applicants and enrolled students. The PCOM Office of Admissions will facilitate a criminal background check prior to matriculation processed by a PCOM vendor of choice. Subsequent criminal background checks can occur during enrollment, including but not limited to, when the student is conducting internships, clerkships, clinical coursework, or other types of coursework that occur off campus. Should you be charged, convicted of, or plead guilty or no contest to a misdemeanor or felony crime after the date of your original application submission, you are required to notify the Dean of your program in writing within 10 business days of the occurrence. This communication should be sent by certified mail to the Dean at the address on the acceptance letter.

Post-Professional Program

The following information is applicable to the MS in Medical Laboratory Science post-professional program.

The post professional program accepts students each term on a rolling admissions basis. The deadline for each term is the 15th of the month prior to the start of each term.

  • Writing sample
    • APA style format, 7th edition
    • There is no requirement on topic, it can be a previously submitted assignment, and will be assessed for grammar, flow of the paper, topic transitions throughout the paper, APA style format, and general grammar and punctuation skills.
  • Technical Standards form completed
  • ASCP or AMT certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist or Technologist (MLS/MT)
Is there a baccalaureate degree requirement for the Medical Laboratory Science program?

Yes, a BS in medical or clinical lab science from a National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited program is required.

PCOM fully online courses are not open to applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents for the 2024-2025 academic year.

In accordance with the March 2020 guidance, new or Initial F-1 and M-1 students who were not previously enrolled in a program of study on March 9, 2020, will not be able to enter the United States as a nonimmigrant student for the 2024-2025 academic year if their course of study is 100 percent online. Consistent with this guidance, PCOM cannot issue a Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status,” for a student in new or Initial status who is outside of the United States for courses operating fully online.
