On April 28, Janae Winston (EdS ’26) will graduate from the Educational Specialist Program (EdS) program at PCOM with plans to continue working in urban school settings where she hopes to expand access to mental health resources and advocate for underserved communities.

“I’ve seen firsthand how access to quality mental health and educational support can shape a child’s future,” she said. “I aspire to advocate for underserved communities by increasing access to mental health resources and supporting students in reaching their full potential. I hope to take on leadership roles where I can influence systemic change and help create more equitable educational environments.”

Growing up in Philadelphia, Winston recalls rarely seeing healthcare professionals who looked like her. It was an experience that ultimately motivated her career path.

“I’ve always been drawn to helping people, but more specifically, I’ve always wanted to support children who may feel misunderstood or overlooked,” she said. “Pursuing a career in school psychology allows me to advocate for students’ academic, social, and emotional needs while helping create equitable opportunities for success.”

Through her coursework, practicum placements, and internship, Winston gained extensive experience working with diverse student populations, conducting evaluations, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—a foundation she says began at PCOM.

“PCOM represents growth, resilience, and purpose. My experience here pushed me beyond my comfort zone and helped me develop both confidence and competence in my skills,” she said. “PCOM didn’t just prepare me academically; it helped shape me into a well-rounded, compassionate professional who is ready to make an impact.”

Some of Winston’s most meaningful experiences have come from working directly with students, families, and educators during her field placements, people whom she describes as her daily inspiration.

“Their resilience, strength, and ability to navigate challenges motivates me to continue showing up and advocating for them. I am also inspired by the professionals who are committed to making a difference in underserved communities, as they remind me of the importance of representation, empathy, and dedication in this field.”

When asked what advice she’d give to future students, she emphasizes the importance of trusting yourself and embracing the journey. “There will be moments of doubt, but those are often the moments where you grow the most. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, lean on your support system, and take things one step at a time. Most importantly, remember why you started and stay grounded in your purpose.”
