​JOSHUA O. OWOLABI, PHD, MBA, MSC, MMEDED
Associate Professor

Dr. Joshua O. Owolabi is currently an associate professor at PCOM South Georgia. He teaches anatomy, neuroscience, histology, embryology and related basic medical science subjects to osteopathic medicine and biomedical sciences students.

His academic qualifications include: PhD in Anatomy (OOU, Nigeria), PhD in Public Health-Neuroepidemiology Specialization (UCN, Guyana), a MSc in Anatomy (Ilorin, Nigeria), MBA (NIBM, India), Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education (USW, United Kingdom), MMedEd in medical in Medical Education (USW, United Kingdom), and BSc in Anatomy (Ilorin, Nigeria). He was formerly a research fellow at the University of Madrid in Spain and a postdoctoral associate at Yale University.

He has taught and mentored medical and health sciences students in Nigeria, Liberia, Rwanda and the United States. His immediate past academic and professional roles included vice president of the Society of Clinical Anatomist of Rwanda, a representative on the IFAA world council, and head of the anatomy department and Chair of the Curriculum Committee at the University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda.

Some of his recent partnership and collaborations involved Harvard University (United States), Leipzig University (Germany), and University of Nebraska (United States). He has served as an external examiner (MSc/PhD) to Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), KwaZulu Natal University (South Africa), and Kampala International University (Uganda). He is a member of several professional bodies including International Brain Research Organization, American Association of Clinical Anatomists, Anatomy Society United Kingdom, and Anatomical Society of Nigeria. He is also the convener of African Network for Drug Epidemiology and Neuroepidemiology.

Dr. Owolabi is a medical scientist, educator, policy advocate, science communicator, life-long learner and  academic leader. He is an international scholar of repute with over 140 publications. He also currently volunteers with Academics Without Borders (Canada).

Dr. Owolabi's current research projects include:

  • Development of an online training program in health profession education with Academics Without Borders, Canada
  • EdTech-MedEd Integration: Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) framework, operationalizing matrices and supporting resources development and digitalization with an ASIC app on webpages as well as iOS and Android platforms.
  • Radiofrequency radiation effects on genetic and molecular markers of aging, neuroinflammation, neurogenesis and neurodegeneration.
  • Neuroepidemiology of neurological diseases
