About the Chestnut Hill Hospital Alliance

On January 1, 2023, an Alliance formed by Temple Health, Redeemer Health and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) officially acquired Chestnut Hill Hospital in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Chestnut Hill Hospital Alliance LogosTemple Health – Chestnut Hill Hospital (TH-CHH) is a 148-bed community-based inpatient and outpatient facility offering diagnostic and treatment services, including emergency care, minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery, cardiology, gynecology, oncology, and orthopedics, primary care practices, two Women's Centers, and an off-site physical therapy center. TH-CHH remains a freestanding, licensed acute care hospital under a not-for-profit company owned and controlled by the Alliance and managed by Temple Health

This opportunity was much more than a financial transaction for PCOM. The alliance provides a novel solution for preserving an important hospital that has been serving its community for more than 100 years and strengthens community access to important healthcare services and world-class academic care.

Each member of the Alliance has deep roots in the northwest Philadelphia and eastern Montgomery County communities served by TH-CHH. Each has an interest in preserving this community resource, and each brings distinct value to this strategic partnership:

  • PCOM adds a strong primary care network and contributes to the experiential learning environment, including established residency programs in internal medicine, surgery and the transitional year at Temple Health-Chestnut Hill Hospital. PCOM also plans to implement and expand clinical education opportunities for doctor of osteopathic medicine and physician assistant studies students.
  • Temple Health brings clinical expertise in dozens of high-acuity services and experience in clinical integration and operational efficiencies across campuses and has a proven track record of delivering high-quality care, with operational efficiency and exceptional outcomes.
  • Redeemer Health adds referral networks and expertise in women’s care, as well as post-acute care such as long-term care, home care and hospice, all of which are valuable to the alliance. Redeemer Health will also help provide greater access to specialty care and other highly needed services in the community.

Through this Alliance and the collective support of our partners, PCOM is able to continue training the next generation of healthcare practitioners at Temple Health - Chestnut Hill Hospital for medical students, physician residents and other healthcare professionals. Most importantly, the College is helping preserve a critical community resource that has served the northwest Philadelphia and east Montgomery County area for more than 100 years.
