MATTHEW SHELNUTT, DO '17, FACOOG
Assistant Professor
Matthew Shelnutt, DO ’17, is an assistant professor of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine
(OMM) at PCOM South Georgia. A native of Stockbridge, Georgia, Dr. Shelnutt earned
his bachelor's degree in biology from Clayton State University and is a 2017 graduate
of PCOM Georgia's Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program, where he served as
an Osteopathic Undergraduate Teaching Scholar.
He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Michigan
Health–West in Wyoming, Michigan, where he served as co-chief resident and as Resident
Representative to the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists
(ACOOG) Continuing Medical Education Committee. Following residency, Dr. Shelnutt
practiced clinically at Ascension Borgess Hospital, teaching OB/GYN residents as a
clinical assistant professor for Western Michigan University’s Homer Stryker MD School
of Medicine. In 2022, he received the institution’s OB/GYN Excellence in Teaching
Award.
Dr. Shelnutt now serves as full-time faculty at PCOM South Georgia, where he teaches
in the Department of OMM and helps lead curricular integration between osteopathic
principles and clinical medicine. He is National Faculty in both the Clinical Department
of OB/GYN and OPP/NMM for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME),
an Associate Board Examiner for the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology
(AOBOG), and Complex Family Planning Advisor for the proposed Tift Regional Hospital
OB/GYN Residency Program.
Dr. Shelnutt is deeply involved in professional and community leadership. He serves
as Secretary/Treasurer (2024–2025) and incoming President of Georgia Osteopathic Medical
Association (GOMA) District III, and he is a graduate of the AACOM Senior Leadership
Development Program (Class of 2025). His recent honors include the PCOM South Georgia
Employee DEI Award (2023), the National Diversity Council LGBTQIA+ Leadership Award
(2024), and the PCOM Lavender LGBTQIA+ Leadership Award (2024).
His academic and professional interests include advancing health equity, reducing
morbidity and mortality among pregnant people of color, and improving healthcare access
and education for the LGBTQIA+ community. Dr. Shelnutt continues to maintain active
clinical privileges in southwest Georgia, where he remains dedicated to teaching,
mentorship, and compassionate patient care.
