President's Diversity Council

The President's Diversity Council at PCOM was created to make recommendations to the President on matters of equity and diversity and provides strategic execution of the College's Diversity Plan.

The primary mission of the Diversity Council is to develop, recommend and sponsor policies, procedures and programs that facilitate a more diverse and pluralistic campus community that is welcoming, safe and affirming for all. The Council will address the issues of: diversity leadership, student recruitment and retention, curriculum, faculty recruitment and retention and research. Additionally, the Council will be charged with implementing a diversity mission, goals and objectives.

The Council will regularly advise the President’s Cabinet on matters of diversity and provide insight and understanding of the importance of fostering an appreciation of diversity at PCOM while sharing diversity best practices. The Council will also provide a venue for reviewing the current state of the College’s diversity efforts, creation of a plan for promoting diversity throughout the College and developing long-range planning initiatives to ensure the College reflects the rich diversity of cultural heritage and experiences found in the community, Pennsylvania, Georgia and the world.

Since the inaugural meetings of the Diversity Council at both campuses, the Council has undertaken several initiatives. The following Sub-Councils have been adopted – LGBTQIA, Disability and Other Special Needs, Gender Diversity and Inclusion, Educational Outreach and Alumni Engagement, Nominations, Military Members, Veterans & their Families, and Measurement & Outcomes.

These Sub-Councils have met and are implementing the following diversity initiatives into the PCOM Community:

  • LGBTQIA Sub-Council — Training to have Safe Zone areas on campus, LGBT Healthcare Week, HIV training and certification for students, and creation of LGBT healthcare resources on campus.
  • Disability and Other Special Needs — have drafted policy for religious accommodations for students and employees for implementation following board approval.
  • Gender, Diversity and Inclusion — have discussed several workshops for women.
  • Educational Outreach and Alumni Engagement — several initiatives to promote PCOM in the community; proposed collaboration with local colleges/universities and secondary schools to engage students in the STEM field.
  • Nominations — this sub-council will generate new membership for the Diversity Council as per the stipulations of the bylaws.
  • Measurement and Outcomes — will seek to gather data.
