Computer Recommendations

Every semester, faculty and students use programs that are more sophisticated than those used in previous years. These more sophisticated applications require faster computers. In general, the newer the computer, the better your experience will be.

Which Computer Should I Purchase?

Before you purchase a system, we’d urge you to examine how you will use that computer. Your work habits, possible fields of study and interests should shape your decision. Decide between a Mac or a Windows system. The platform should match your interests. In general, both will work on PCOM’s Network. Many of the major vendors, such as Apple, Dell, Lenovo and HP offer discounts to students.

Tablets such as iPads may not support every system or program so we recommend using them as a supplement, rather than a replacement, for a traditional computer.

Hardware Recommendations

If you are planning on buying a computer to use for the next three or more years, we would recommend the computer you select meet the following specifications:

Examplify® Requirements

Examplify® Requirements for Windows:

  • Operating System: 32-bit and 64-bit Versions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.
  • All Windows 10 Creators versions, including the Spring 1803 update are now supported on Examplify version 1.5.0.
  • Alternate versions of Windows 10, such as Windows RT and Windows 10 S, are not supported at this time.
  • Only genuine, U.S. English versions of Windows operating systems are supported.
  • ExamSoft does not support tablet devices other than Surface Pro as detailed below.
  • CPU Processor: 1.86Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo or greater.
  • RAM: highest recommended for the operating system or 2GB.
  • Hard Drive: highest recommended for the operating system or 1GB of available space.
  • For onsite support, and in order to backup the answer files to USB, a working USB port is required (newer devices may require an adaptor).
  • For technical troubleshooting, account passwords - including BitLocker keys - may be required.
  • Internet connection for download, registration, exam download and upload.
  • Screen resolution should be at least 1024x768 or higher.
  • Administrator level account permissions.

Surface Pro Requirements:

  • Surface Pro, Surface Books, and Surface Laptops are supported (non-Pro Surface devices are not supported).
  • Must be running a supported operating system (see PC requirements).
  • External keyboard (USB or Bluetooth) required. Bluetooth keyboards must be paired prior to launching exam.
  • Hard drive: minimum of 1GB available space.
  • For onsite support, and in order to backup the answer files to USB, a working USB port is required (newer devices may require an adaptor).
  • Internet connection for download, registration, exam download and upload.
  • Screen resolution must be 1920x1080.
  • Administrator level account permissions.

This software can be used on most modern Mac OS X based computers (i.e. purchased within the last 3-4 years). Please see specific system requirements as noted below.

This software cannot be used on virtual operating systems such as Microsoft's Virtual Machine, Parallels, VMware, VMware Fusion or any other virtual environments.

Examplify® Requirements for Apple:

  • Supported operating systems: OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), OS X 10.11 (El Capitan), and OS 10.12 (Sierra). Only genuine versions of Mac operating systems are supported.
  • OS 10.13 (High Sierra) is now supported.
  • CPU: Intel processor
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Hard drive: 1GB or higher available space
  • For onsite support, and in order to backup the answer files to USB, a working USB port is required (newer devices may require an adaptor).
  • For technical troubleshooting, account passwords - including device passwords - may be required.
  • Server version of Mac OS X is not supported.
  • Internet connection for download, registration, exam download and upload.
  • Administrator level account permissions.
