What Does a School Psychologist Do and Where Do They Work?

School psychologists play a crucial role in supporting students, families, and education professionals to promote optimal learning for children. They work diligently to implement strategies that address behavioral, developmental, or academic issues that may hinder a student's performance in school. 

School psychologists have the flexibility to work in various settings such as educational institutions, hospitals, clinics, community agencies, or even in private practice. Their primary objective is to help students overcome obstacles by identifying them and applying suitable interventions. The demand for school psychologists is on the rise due to the growing awareness of the connection between mental health and learning. 

Dr. Richard Allen, director of PCOM's Educational Specialist program, emphasizes the importance of a school psychologist's expertise in education and social-emotional health. He finds it incredibly rewarding to witness students conquer challenges and make life-changing progress for themselves and their families. According to Allen, apart from working in educational settings, school psychologists can explore other career opportunities. These include roles such as educational consultants, researchers, professors, private practitioners, behavior analysts, special education coordinators, program evaluators, crisis intervention specialists, legislative advocates, social workers, and educational diagnosticians. 

Becoming a school psychologist requires commitment in terms of time, effort, and expense. However, the rewards are significant, Allen said.
