Free Resources

Cochrane Collaboration site provides free, unrestricted access to the abstracts of systematic reviews and offers individual subscriptions to the full database. The full-text of systematic reviews is available via OVID and other commercial vendors.

National Guideline Clearinghouse makes evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and related abstract, summary, and comparison materials widely available to health care professionals. NGC is operated by the U.S.Dept. of Health and Human Services, Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) in partnership with the American Medical Association (AMA), and the American Association of Health Plans (AAHP).
 
SUMSearch from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center is a single gateway that  searches Merck Manual, MEDLINE for review articles, editorials, and original research, National Guideline Clearinghouse from the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), and Database of Abstract of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE).
 
Bandolier E-Journal - Evidence based thinking about health care  

Trip Database (Turning Research into Practice), hosted by the Centre for Research Support in Wales, is a meta-search engine that searches over 55 sites including Cochrane, DARE, GP Notebook Textbook, e-journals, and practice guidelines.

BMJ Clinical Evidence - a monthly, updated directory of evidence on the effects of common clinical interventions, published by the BMJ Publishing Group. It provides a concise account of the current state of knowledge, ignorance, and uncertainty about the prevention and treatment of a wide range of clinical conditions and summarizes the best available evidence. 

 
Essential Evidence Plus - evidence-based information for clinicians includes abstracts of Cochrane Systematic Reviews, 1,000 brief synopses, relevant, valid articles in the primary care literature, over 55 clinical prediction rules such as the Ottawa Ankle Rules, and detailed information on diagnostic tests, history and physical examination maneuvers in a diagnostic calculator. Also includes POEMs from the  Journal of Family Practice. Access via the Web or download to a PDA. 
 
Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews (OVID EBMR) contains the full text of Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Best Evidence, a database that contains the journals ACP Journal Club and Evidence-Based Medicine, and the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE). While the Cochrane abstracts and DARE are available for free, OVID's EBM Reviews provide the added convenience of simultaneous searching. These sources provide systematic reviews of important healthcare interventions as well as reviews of high-quality, clinically relevant journal articles.
