Department of Psychiatric Medicine

Our department provides training in clinical and basic neurosciences, behavioral medicine and psychiatry to students in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and MS in Health Sciences - Physician Assistant Studies programs. Our faculty includes PhD-level neuroscience faculty and physician psychiatrists who are actively involved in patient care.

Our curriculum focuses on the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in its various forms and degrees of severity. The educational content stresses that beyond the intensity of our understanding of neuroscience, psychiatry is a very clinical and humanistic branch of clinical medicine.

We integrate our coursework with the basic neuroscience program which addresses the neurobiological underpinnings of mental disorders and how that understanding contributes to the care of the mentally ill patient. Our students learn the clinical presentation of the various mental illnesses and how to integrate osteopathic principles and practice into the care of psychiatric patients.
