Comprised of elected representatives from each class and professional degree program, the Student Government Association directs student activities and speaks for students to the College administration. The president is elected by the student body, regular meetings are held, and the association publishes its own newsletter. Students are respected and involved in College governance, serving on every major college committee and working with faculty to evaluate every course they take. The Association is active in sponsoring co-curricular clubs and activities, and has pledged an ongoing commitment to community service.
For the 2007 academic year, PCOM's student body elected Scott Feitell, DO '09, to be the PCOM SGA President.
Greetings PCOM Community,
I would like to welcome all the new students to our campus! I've had the pleasure of meeting so many of you this year whether it be at post exam parties that raise money for charity, guest lectures sponsored by the Surgery club or SOMA, Physician Assistant week bake sales, intramural sporting activities sponsored by PCOM East, and even just walking through the hallway. Perhaps what I'm trying to say is how great it is to see all the activity we have on campus year-round.
Our campus is always gearing up for great activities. SGA's annual Sacrifice 2 Save event will be raising funds for the Philadelphia Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Our goal for this year is to raise as much as possible for the building of a new house. That contribution could single handedly cover 10% of the costs of an affordable, environmentally friendly house in Philadelphia. Another event approaching soon is the American College of Osteopathic Family Physician's National Primary Care Week. Our student chapter should be commended for all the hard work they do for this event. Our Primary Care week is nationally recognized as one of the best of all osteopathic medical schools?this national recognition allows ACOFP to attain huge grants and nationally known speakers to attend.
There are also some interesting topics at the national level. As many of you know, the AOA has a new president, Dr. John Strosnider, and one of his new goals is to raise over $23 million in the next two years as part of the "Greatness Fund". The fund's purpose is to raise national awareness of osteopathic medicine by launching a national media campaign including television commercials on national network programming and print ads in major media outlets. There has also been a great deal of discussion about growth in our field with the addition of many more osteopathic medical schools over the next ten years. I encourage each and every one of you to get involved in some way on these topics and others. Many issues being discussed today will affect each and every one of us by the time we graduate or finish residency. The easiest way to get involved is to attend club meetings on campus. Nearly every club on campus, particularly national clubs, touch on certain aspects of these and many other crucial issues.
On behalf of the entire SGA, I would like to wish all of you the best of luck this year.
Scott Feitell
SGA President, 2006-2007
