Message from the Vice Dean
Welcome to the Web site of Georgia Campus - Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine! We are pleased about your interest in our branch campus and are grateful for your time in looking at our materials. Our campus is located about 30 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta at 625 Old Peachtree Road NW in Suwanee, GA.
The primary focus of Georgia Campus - PCOM is to recruit and educate students from Georgia and the surrounding states. The Georgia Campus seeks to retain graduate osteopathic physicians, scientists and other health care professionals in the southeast and advance the osteopathic profession to serve the health needs of the region.
GA-PCOM’s facility offers state-of-the-art technology to enhance the learning experiences for all our students. We emphasize substantial use of computer technology to include a wireless network, coursework support using the Black Board computer system, digital video and distance learning capability, digital medical library with medical text books online, many databases for research and review, and an extensive collection of full text journals. Our clinical learning lab offers our students the opportunity to interact with standardized patients to enhance diagnostic and physician-patient skills. Our research laboratory supports our faculty’s scholarly activity and our graduate students.
The first class of our branch campus started in August 2005 with 80 students in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program. We will continue to accept 80 students into the DO program for the next several years. A master’s degree program (MS) in Biomedical Sciences started in the summer of 2006 with 51 graduate students. It is very likely to grow in the coming years.
GA-PCOM has affiliations with many hospitals and clinics in Georgia and the surrounding states, offering a full spectrum of clinical learning opportunities for our third and fourth year medical students. Clerkships begin in June 2007. A number of opportunities for students are in the metro Atlanta area. Others Georgia sites include hospitals and clinics in Columbus, Augusta, Warner Robins, Athens, Rome, Savannah, and Thomasville. We are also actively working with sites in Anderson, SC; Huntsville, AL; Chattanooga, TN; and in West Palm Beach and Orlando, FL. Our clinical education network will expand even more in the future.
GA-PCOM’s faculty consists of experienced PhD and physician instructors, both fulltime at the campus and from the community. A large number of community-based physicians have signed on to teach students in their clinical practices.
GA-PCOM is developing Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs to support the community and the region with medical education for physicians (DO and MD). Courses will be offered in many clinical topics in primary care, orthopedics, musculoskeletal manipulation, internal medicine, and other specialty areas. Check the CME sections of the web site for the latest conferences and workshops.
Thanks again for visiting our Web page. This is an exciting time for GA-PCOM and for osteopathic medicine in the South. We look forward to becoming a valued partner in medical education with Georgia, and in training new physicians and biomedical scientists for the future.
