Gary H. Watson, PhD Chair, Basic Sciences
Dr. Watson earned his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in Endocrinology. After graduation from MCG, Dr. Watson moved to Texas Tech Health Sciences Center where he completed a three-year Robert Welch Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Biochemistry. He has an extensive career in medical education and graduate education, and served as the Associate Dean for Research at Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine for over 20 years prior to coming to PCOM. Dr. Watson's research interests are in the area of mechanisms of steroid hormone action, centered on extra-nuclear actions of estradiol in the uterus and anterior pituitary. His work as an independent investigator has been in the area of sex steroid hormone action in adipose tissue and endocrine factors in post-partum depression. Dr. Watson is married and has two daughters. He enjoys hunting and fishing, and is an avid golfer.
