Objective & Description
Modern medicine has produced remarkable advances in the cure of acute illnesses. On the other hand, there has been much less success in treating chronic diseases. These and other medical realities of the 21st century demand a sharper and more persistent focus on long-term medical management and health behavior change. This program will focus on barriers to patient adherence and practical strategies to promote and sustain health behavior change.
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Discuss communication styles and skills which influence patient behavior change.
- Identify critical components of enhancing intrinsic motivation for health behavior change in their patients.
- Explain how the "patient centered" clinical approach could be employed in patient decision making and motivation.
- Describe how chronic care models could be utilized to enhance adherence in primary care settings.
- Evaluate methods for providing patient education, feedback and advice that can increase effectiveness of important practitioner behaviors.
- Reflect upon their own motivation and willingness to promote healthy behaviors, given limited time and the pressure of market-driven incentives.
