subpage_titleblockInternship Application Help

Students should start obtaining their INTERNSHIP APPLICATIONS in the spring of their junior year by calling the Director of Medical Education offices of those hospitals where they intend to apply. They should also ask for the application deadline date. Any questions regarding tracking should be addressed with the DME's offices. To be on the safe side, apply to at least two programs, for those of you in the military, you should apply to civilian hospitals as well.

Most applications will request:

  1. Copy of Board Scores. Mail them a copy of your results, if you do not have them, they can be obtained by calling National Boards in Illinois at (773) 714-0622. PCOM does not have those results.
  2. Original Transcripts. Must be requested in writing from PCOM Admissions Office.
  3. Letters of Recommendation. This request is usually for two to three letters, either one from the Dean and two others, or two or three altogether. You may ask any attending with whom you have rotated to write a letter on your behalf (do not hesitate, they all know that you need these letters and are used to being asked, quite a few will even offer). It is a nice gesture to provide the attending with addressed and stamped envelopes for the programs where you are applying. The Dean requires that you provide him with your Resume or Curriculum Vitae as a help for him since he does not know everyone personally. The Office of Clinical Education can provide you with CV examples, if needed.
DO NOT HAVE YOUR LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION MAILED TO THE OFFICE OF CLINICAL EDUCATION. They must be mailed directly to the programs where you are applying.
  4. Picture. This is usually optional. If you do not have any, the Office of Clinical Education can provide you with a copy of your first year class picture.

After applications are received, the DME's office(s) will call you to arrange interview appointments, you may, at that time, ask if your application is completed, if not, ask what is missing, i.e., some letters of recommendations, transcripts, etc.. It is your responsibility to provide the missing items.

ERAS APPLICATION PROCESS

ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) was developed to transmit residency applications, letters of recommendations, Dean's Letters, transcripts and other supporting credentials from medical schools to residency program directors using the Internet, these include military residencies as well as most AMA residencies. Students should contact programs directly for their requirements. ERAS consists of three components: the Student Workstation, the Dean's Office Workstation and the Program Directors Workstation. Using ERAS Student Workstation (SWS) software, applicants complete an application on a diskette, obtained from the Dean's Office and after completing the diskette, deliver the diskette to the Dean's Office. The completed electronic application and designation list are uploaded on the Dean's Office Workstation in an electronic file folder and transmitted to the ERAS Post Office. Residency programs connected with the ERAS Post Office then download the applications. More information can be obtained on their web page at: www.aamc.org/eras. Both applications´ processes should start at the same time.

AOA PROGRAMS DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN ERAS

Hopefully, this will put some light into the confusion of the INTERNSHIP APPLICATION process. Should you have any questions, please call our office.
