William Ronald Henwood, DO '76, FACOS, FICS
Alumni Association Certificate of Honor 2010 Recipient

Throughout his career, Dr. Henwood has served the osteopathic profession in many academic and leadership capacities. He has provided leadership to surgery residency programs in Western Pennsylvania as Regional Assistant Dean of Western Pennsylvania for PCOM and been recognized for his teaching by local, regional and national medical and osteopathic associations.

On behalf of the American Osteopathic Association and the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, he is the director of the General Surgery Residency Program for Horizon Hospital System, Shenango and Greenville campuses, where he is likewise on staff as a practicing physician.

An avid lecturer, Dr. Henwood acts as an oral examiner for the American Board of Osteopathic Surgery and a consultant to the National Board Examiners of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons.

He is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (board of governors), the American Osteopathic Association, the International College of Surgeons, the Mercer County Medical Society, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association (vice-chairman, district IX), the American Osteopathic Association of Sports Medicine, the Flying Physicians Association and the Undersea Medical Society. He serves on committees of many professional and educational organizations including the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association of PCOM for 10 years and as its president in 1997. 

In both 1994 and 1995, Dr. Henwood was the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award presented by the intern class of Horizon Hospital System, Shenango Valley Campus. In 1995, he received the Alumni Achievement Award from Duquesne University.

Board certified in general surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery, Dr. Henwood is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons.

He holds a doctor of osteopathic degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Duquesne University. He completed his internship at the Hospital of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and his general surgery residency and surgical research/ shock and trauma fellowship at the Osteopathic Medical Center of Philadelphia. In addition, Dr. Henwood completed specialty training in urologic surgery at the Osteopathic Medical Center of Philadelphia and in cancer surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
