D.O./M.S. Forensic Medicine Dual Degree Track

Guidelines to Application

  • A currently enrolled D.O. student may make application for the joint degree program. The student must be in good academic standing and must have successfully completed the first term of the first year of medical school.
  • An interview with Forensic Medicine director and/or the medical director is required after completing the necessary application materials.
  • All first year medical school remedial coursework must be satisfactorily completed in order to be accepted into the dual degree track.
  • The dual degree track starts in the winter term of the student's second year of medical school studies.
  • The student will be required to decelerate his/her second year of medical school to allow for the additional course work of graduate school. The dual D.O./M.S. curriculum extends the second year of the medical school curriculum over two years.
  • Applications to the dual track are available by contacting the program office at 871-6161.
  • The student will take the following Forensic Medicine courses:

  • The following criteria must be met to maintain good academic standing in the dual degree track:
  • A cumulative 3.0 GPA or greater is required to be awarded the Master of Science degree; if a student does not attain a 3.0 after all coursework is completed, the student will be required to remediate coursework to increase his/her GPA for degree candidacy.
  • Failure to achieve a 2.0 GPA at the end of a term will result in academic probation from the M.S. Forensic Medicine program.
  • Students who fail a course for a second time will be dismissed from the dual degree track.
  • Scheduling of course work in the graduate school is as follows:
  • Forensic Medicine courses commence in the winter semester for the D.O./M.S. track.
  • Courses are offered once annually.
  • Order of course work: 501, 502, followed by one of the online courses (504, 506, 513). The order of the online courses is subject to change and may be extended over the third and four years of medical school.

  •  FMED 507-Internship must be completed at a site that is approved of by the Forensic Medicine faculty.
  • *The following Forensic Medicine courses will be awarded credit: FMED 500-Pathology and FMED 505-Bioethics. These courses are offered in the D.O. curriculum.
