Scientists in the biomedical field are frontrunners in today's sophisticated and increasingly skilled medical and research arenas. They conduct research in labs and hospitals supporting the work of medical staff and clinicians. They also work in forensics, public health and in the bioscience educational, legal or management sectors. With a solid foundation in biomedical sciences, graduates can also continue their education and pursue careers as physicians, physician assistants, public health professionals, pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians, optometrists and other health specialists.
At PCOM, students choose to earn graduate degrees with concentrations in the growing fields of biomedical study or continue in a number of different health professions. Lankenau Graduate Assistantship Program
Foundation Year – The first year of the program emphasizes biomedical concepts and is more generally designed for those who are preparing to continue their education in medical school or other health professions programs. Courses are similar in subject matter to the first-year courses in professional degree programs. Students who complete the curriculum benefit from instruction that they will be able to use as they enter a career or further their education in a professional school. The foundation courses provide a strong base of biomedical lecture and laboratory work designed for the working student as a full-time evening course schedule. The program represents a broad content base in the basic biomedical sciences with a strong emphasis on human medicine and clinical applications of the material. Upon completion of the first year of study, the certificate of graduate study is awarded. Students enter as MS degree candidates and may progress to one of three second-year degree concentrations: Biomedical Research, Forensic Biology or Organizational Leadership in the Biosciences.
MS in Biomedical Sciences with concentration in Biomedical Research – Earning a Master of Science Degree in Biomedical Sciences with a Concentration in Biomedical Research provides students with skills in scientific method, research design, methodology, writing and presentation that can be used in industry, clinical environments and teaching. In addition, some students consider this concentration as preparation for a future professional or doctoral program application. Those in the research concentration conduct original research supervised by a PCOM faculty member whom they choose as an advisor.
MS in Biomedical Sciences with Concentration in Forensic Biology – Individuals selecting to earn their Master of Science Degree with a Concentration in Forensic Biology will gain an understanding of the analytical tools used in forensics. Graduates find opportunities in investigation and examination positions in a variety of industries. The forensics concentration offers foundation in the theory, concepts and principles of forensic medicine, the medico-legal and technical aspects of death scene investigations and clinical pathology skills. Those pursuing a Concentration in Forensic Biology will complete 24 additional credit hours of graduate coursework in the respective discipline.
MS in Biomedical Sciences with Concentration in Organizational Leadership in the Biosciences – A Concentration in Organizational Leadership in the Biosciences opens doors to management and leadership opportunities within major corporations, hospitals or medical facilities. With additional courses in organizational development and leadership, behavioral interviewing and team dynamics, and small and large system diagnosis and change theory, students gain the necessary skills to improve organizational and human effectiveness and become strong leaders. Those choosing the Concentration in Organizational Leadership in the Biosciences will complete 24 additional credit hours to graduate.
